Ohio Tiki Roadtrip 2014

Hanging out at Surly Girl Saloon in Columbus

Derek and I were super excited to get-a-way for a small road trip to Columbus, Ohio and Cleveland, Ohio to visit the new Tiki bars that opened in both cities and to do some vintage shopping. It was a nice break from the crappy winter (even though it was freezing and briefly snowed in Columbus) and indulge in one of our obsessions....Tiki!

Picture heavy blog! I apologize as the photos are all cell phone quality.

We've gotten pretty good at winterizing our vintage barkcloth Tiki gear. We really don't care it makes no sense, we want to be in the 'Aloha Spirit' while keeping warm. *Wink*

First stop was Grass Skirt Tiki Room in Columbus, I loved the mini volcano! The sun also came out after a freak snow/wind storm.

We had a lot of fun goofing around and snapping photos with some of the amazing decor. I took a lot of photos, even though it was extremely dark inside, which is typical of a Tiki bar. I won't bore you with all the details, but the drinks and the food were great!

Derek found his perfect mug!

Next stop was Porco Lounge & Tiki Room in Cleveland, which wasn't much to look at from the outside, but it is was a warm and inviting inside the lounge.

We were admiring the owner Stefan's Tiki mug collection, so many vintage and retired Tiki Farm mugs! Heaven!

View from our booth

We had a blast together at Grass Skirt, but Porco was an amazing experience. Not only was our bartender Shawn knowledgeable and friendly, he made our evening special and so much fun! We made some new friends who came over and sat at our booth as well as the rest of the bar staff who came over to introduce themselves. So. Much. Fun. We left with the owner Stefan hugging us and wishes us to hurry back to visit. We really felt like we became part of the Porco family and I can't wait to come back! Sigh.

Haha, I love this goof!

Mmmmm!

We didn't leave Ohio without plundering some vintage shops and we didn't think we bought that much until we unpacked all the bags......

.....and that's just the Tiki items. Haha! Well, I did have my 'no buy' beginning of the month and ended with a (Tiki) bang!

We came home tired, but happy. There are more Tiki trips this year and I can't wait!

Feeling a Little Western

Sometimes the simplest touches evoke a feeling to an outfit, like wearing this white ribbon tie blouse and pointy boots which is making me feel a little "Western".

We just got back from a Ohio Tiki roadtrip, so I wasn't feel very creative in the wardrobe department since I've been living out of a duffle bag for almost a week, but last night I decided to pin curl my hair. I haven't properly set my hair in pin curls in quite a while, so I was happily surprised when I brushed out the curls and styled my hair. I don't look like Ronald McDonald, yay! My hair is at a weird point in terms of style, growing out and I've just become a little bored, so curls seemed like a nice change of pace.

Happy Friday!!

Hanging Out

This week has been filled with starting a new calf tattoo on Monday, finished sewing these vintage barkcloth pillows for the Tiki room and finding this rad zebra shirt for $2 while thrift shopping.

I've been doing a lot of little home decor projects around the house, I just got a sudden burst of energy that may have been inspired by spring being right around the corner.

I was bad and broke my 'no buy' March with this coffin locket from Kreepsville 666. I was browsing eBay and found the necklace at a good price, so I bought it. The locket has been on my wishlist for quite some time and I was a bad girl. It was worth it! Hehe!

(Actually the 'no buy' is so that I can go crazy next week when we take a mini Tiki roadtrip. Muahaha!)

On the Wire : March

This month has flown by and it was already time for our monthly event On the Wire! I had a great time on Saturday catching up with friends and making some new acquaintances. We get a really nice mix of people at the event who all seem to really enjoy themselves and that makes for a very relaxed evening.

I did some work to this grey leopard vest, so I didn't have have to think too much as to what I was going to wear and I like when that happens! It gets cold in the club, so I paired the vest with a long sleeve shirt, skater skirt, silver bones leggings and added my Demonia Brogue-06 boots.

Have a great week!

Style Tips From the 80s

I've been continuing my quest to shop my closet and style some pieces I don't wear, like this flowy thrifted skirt. The elastic band doesn't excite me, but the material, hemline and the flow of the skirt has made me keep this in my closet.

An idea popped into my head to layer a tunic top over the skirt, add a belt and tie a scarf around my waist. I'm taking some style inspiration from 80s band like; Adam Ant and the Ants, Duran Duran and Siouxsie Sioux, and infusing them into outfits.

I picked up a few Rimmel 'Show Off' Lip Lacquers to try and they are now my new favorite 'lip goo' as I'm sort of a lip gloss junkie. The lacquers are moisturizing and unlike lip gloss alone, these are more pigmented and have decent staying power. I got Light Year (wearing in photo) and Stargazer, so I'm interested in trying some of other shades!

Black Netted Skirt

I'm pretty lucky that I have awesome friends who not only love clothes, but love to give me their clothing. (Thanks Julie Ann!) This especially makes me happy since I'm having a no buy clothing/shoes March, so I did some shopping in my closet. I decided to do some wardrobe brainstorming during a snowstorm...heyyyy, it's March and it was just 45 degrees on Tuesday. Ugh.

Yeah, I'm complaining about the weather again. I'm over it, I put up the white flag. Meh's all around.

I wanted to dress down this long black netted skirt (from Julie Ann) by Free People, so I paired it with my new Christian Death t-shirt (made by my friend Jason) and I added a stretch belt to cover the drawstring on the skirt. I think it works and I like the silhouette, but the belt kept sliding around which got to be quite annoying.

Do you ever have closet brainstorming sessions?

The Hard to See Purple Velvet Dress

After reviewing the photos, I realized that you can't tell that this dress is dark purple, haha! It makes sense as Derek didn't realize it was purple until he saw the dress in direct light and exclaimed, "Wow, it's purple!". It's a sleeveless stretch velvet dress that I picked up at a thrift store for a few bucks. You know, the ones I used to wear in the 90s that's (now) considered retro. So weird!

Pretty simple outfit for a warm day, which made me happy that I didn't have to sport five layers of clothing. The Spring Equinox is eight days away and I'm looking forward to packing away all the heavy sweaters and pulling out my cotton dresses and wearing my vests. Positive warm thoughts!

Shoe cam!

In other randomness, I've had "Barbarism Begins At Home" stuck in my head ever since last Friday's The Cure vs. The Smiths dance party. It's one of my favorite Smiths songs played at one of my favorite dance nights of the year.....but you know I love The Cure more.

Eye of Horus

I was happy to add an Eye of Horus necklace to my jewelry collection as I enjoy ancient Egyptian symbolism and mythology. I've been watching a lot of documentaries on the subject and I'm hoping to go visit the mummies at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Last time I was at the museum the exhibit was under construction, so I've been waiting patiently and I see that a new exhibit, 'Mummies of the World' is opening April 12th. Yay!!!

I Dream of Shoes : Pascal Hell Boot

Derek was paging through a Journey's catalog and exclaimed, "This is Hieronymous Bosch's art on a Doc!". We both enjoy his religious artwork from the 15th century and thought that the Pascal Hell Boot by Dr. Martens is pretty darn amazing!

I'm pretty excited about my new Death in June t-shirt that our friend Jason made for me, I love the silver ink!

Awesome cotton skater skirt from H&M $12.95

I'm finally starting to feel more human after last week's sinusitis, so a cute outfit was a refreshing change from wearing my bum-around-because-I-don't-care clothing.

Flashback!

I found this old photo of Derek and I from several years ago, taken at one of our local goth nights. I have no idea what I am doing other than being a total goof. Haha!

I've been feeling extremely under the weather this past week, dealing with some major sinus issues and more snow. Blah! Calgon take me away!
