Flashback: Victorian Dress

I've been going through some our two external hard drives and I came across these photos I snapped in 2011. I have no clue why I took them, but I'm glad I did as it's fun to look back in time!

Beautiful Lip Service Victorian style dress with a long crinoline slip underneath.

I just realized how naked my right arm looks!

I may find some more oldies as I'm going through files in preparation for my new Surface 3 which will be picked up today. I finally have to retire my almost 8 year old laptop as the system is starting to fail. *Sigh* I am not a technophobe, I just don't really care for change when it comes to my media. I certainly know Derek is excited to not hear me screaming, "I hate YOU" every time my laptop freezes or decides to just stop working. Hahaha!!! Movin' on up!

I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

I Am Thankful

Derek painted 'Elvis Christ' behind me

Wow, what a wonderfully nice day! Besides the relaxing morning, we prepped the house for Friendsgiving tomorrow and took these photos. We had to move our dining table over in order to fit the banquet table, so I figured it was a perfect time to use our wall-o-velvet as a back drop for some photo fun!

I love my house and I love this guy.

This is why we can never take "normal" photos.

Pointy boot love!

Weirdo's forever!

Since we were dressed so snazzy, we went out to dinner at an Indian buffet (which was delicious) and we're going to spend the rest of the evening watching movies and sipping on cocktails. I am very thankful.

I hope you are enjoying your evening.

Lace Blouse

I don't know why, but I've been feeling the pants vibe as of late. So, I paired some treggings (why are they called that!?) with a lace blouse and my trusty ponte knit blazer. I love ponte knit, it has such better structure and feel than jersey, and has a lot more movement than straight polyester. Very easy to pair with a variety of other fabrics and washes beautifully.

I also got a hair cut and I'm feelin' fancy for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, which we're celebrating by either getting Chinese, Ethiopian or possibly Indian food. It's our first Thanksgiving in the house, so it will be nice and quite, but we'll also be prepping the house/food to host Friendsgiving on Friday. Can't wait for the carb fest! Hehehe!

Thank you for reading and Happy Thanksgiving to my US readers!

Coffin Kitsch Featured on Still Weird Zine

I was contacted by Shirley Kirby from Still Weird Zine and she told me I was going to featured in an article. I was totally pumped! When the article was published this morning, not only did I love the title, '10 Fabulous Fashion Bloggers Who Are Still Keeping It Weird', but I was among an amazing group of bloggers!!!! So flattered and I definitely blushed when I saw the article header was my silly mug. Heehehe!!

The Jacket Matches the Drapes

jacket also featured here

What are you dirty birdies thinking?! I really do match my curtains. Hehehe!!!!

While going through the closet this morning and trying to decide what to wear to work, I realized that this vintage barkcloth coat matches my repro barkcloth curtain panels that I had sewn together. PHOTO OP!!!

The patterns are not quite the same and the background colors are different, yet it makes me giggle when I match my surroundings......and I really do love mid century atomic prints, especially in darker colorways.

Off to work I go! Have a great weekend everyone!

Haunt Cardigan by Hell Bunny

Welcome to my bar area/living room! I'm wearing this totally rad Haunt cardigan by Hell Bunny. I snatched this one up at work during our influx of Halloween wear. Every year Hell Bunny makes at least one cardigan that I can't resist!

Though the front has wonderful white embroidered bats on the front, the haunted house on the back is the 'wow' factor. I love the way the one bat is breaking through the moon and is half black and half white. Pretty neat detail.

How many bat items do I have in my closet? A lot. Is that a problem? Not at all. Hehe!

Most of the photos I don't use for the blog are ones of me just acting like a goof. I really don't take myself seriously. *Wink*

Thank you for reading!!!

Matching the Duvet

I'm not trapped in a 80s music video, I'm goofing around on the new duvet we bought for the guest room. I had been searching for a black and white striped duvet that wasn't going to break the bank and we scored one on our Sunday trip to Ikea. *Mental note: never go to Ikea on a Sunday. Never*

Not exactly the type of stripes I wanted, but 'eh' it looks good. PS-Starburst mirror is being replaced when proper artwork is procured and scouting for a head board.

Hey look, it's Popeye on the wall!

Another reason why we went to Ikea was to finally get some furniture parts to use for storage in both mine and Derek's studio spaces. He needs a lot of flat storage for large pieces of artwork and I need a cutting table for my sewing room and shelves for my supplies. We turned to Ikea Hackers for help, as I love thinking outside the box and making things work for us and we got a lot of great ideas that are within our budget! Yeah, we still need to drive to another country to shop at the closest Ikea and it's good thing we love Canada *Wink*.

So. my sewing room is currently a mess, but painting and organizing are in the very near future. I am very excited, as organization helps me to be more creative and focused!

Nun

I just welcomed a new Nun into my convent, she's about 14 inches tall and made of plastic. She was preached on a shelf at a thrift store, like she was just waiting for me to bring her home!

I love Nuns. I don't quite know why, but I do. I have even dressed like a Nun a few times.....

Hehehe!

Little Raspberry Bow

I love this dress by Hell Bunny that I wore to work last week. I have such a weakness for collars (especially Peter Pan style) and little neck bows! Though most people now-a-days would nickname this style of dress a "Wednesday Addams dress", yet the collar style was very common in the; Victorian Era, 1940s and 1960s. It's interesting how pop culture makes some iconic and recognizable. *Wink*

I love fashion and am sort of a historical buff when it comes to researching garments and fashion styles. I find that fashion reflects what was happening at the time socially and economically, perhaps that's why retro and Victorian inspired fashions have become so popular. As our society becomes more casual and relaxed, people are looking back to times when dressing was an art form rather than just for comfort.

On that note: I just watched a documentary about Iris Apfel and I recommend it to all of you.

An Outfit and Memento Mori

Last week/this past weekend was filled with; fun, friends, family, food and finds. Phew, that's a lot of F's and alliteration! I took a moment to snap a few photos of my outfit for Friday night dinner with my in-laws, who were in town for the weekend.

I found this gorgeous lightweight velvet swing coat at a thrift store on Tuesday and I welcomed it into my wardrobe. It's the perfect compliment to a drapey lace dress and winklepickers and it's fun to twirl around in. Hehehe! I like to layer different textures together, especially when I'm wearing an all black ensemble.

I also welcomed a new addition to my Memento Mori collection, a Victorian hair wreath. If you're not familiar with hair art, than this is a great blog post to read. Derek and I took a trip out to an antique shop that we saw advertising on Craigslist, the shop is called "Weird, But True Antiques". About an hour away from Buffalo, we drove out last Sunday and were not disappointed. The small shop was filled with antique taxidermy, skulls, casket plates and had the beautiful hair wreath which is now displayed on our living room wall. (Here is an interesting article about why it's called a living room). Derek was already arranging for the hair wreath to be picked up at a later date when I asked, "Can this be my Yule gift?!". I normally don't ask for such things, but I had already fell in love.

Now it's home. I never thought I'd own a hair wreath, let alone one that is so beautiful and well displayed.

Derek did turn to me one evening (after I was gushing over the piece) and said lovingly, "You're a weird girl". No shit, you married me! Hahahaha!!!

Spider Web Tie and Pants

This outfit was from last week when I was having fun putting together Halloween week outfits. Now that Halloween is over, it makes me sad. It makes me sad that Christmas decorations are everywhere and soon Christmas music will be playing everywhere. Bah! Anywho.....

jacket styled here, here and here

Of course, I'm not going to stop wearing my spooky attire, even after Halloween. NEVER! In fact, here's a nice article written about What Happens When Goths Grow Up.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween! We are celebrating Dia de los Muertos today and I hopefully will share photos of our celebrations. Halloween was too busy to take proper photos as we were entertaining guests. As a side note, I made the Drunk Pumpkin Punch (recipe here) and it was sooooo tasty!

Waiting for the trick or treaters
