Greetings from Paintland

Painting is well under way in the house and we've decided to knock a few walls down in the living room, but in the mean time work and other life responsibilities continue. I managed to squeeze in a few photos of this cute dress that I re-discovered how much I love!

I got the H&M dress from a clothing swap and I'm glad I snatched it up. It's so flowy and swingy, I am going to be on the hunt for more 'tent' style dress. I really dig 60's style!

I also like the dress, because the top very nun-like. Haha!

Merry Kitschmas!

I'm a little late, but Merry Yule and Merry Kitschmas!

Derek got me a pair of vintage Pennangalan boots for my birthday! He's been holding onto
these since January!

Things have been total insanity this week. We closed on the house, had a few very stressful moments, but we're on our way to painting and getting some remodeling done! It's crazy to think that Derek and I own a house. Real adult crap right there. Hahaha!

I also wanted to say THANK YOU for the birthday wishes and congrats on the house. I am so touched!!!!

Hope you're enjoying your holiday season!

Reader Question : Handbag Help

I got an email from a reader, Andra and she asked me this question:

I read your blog quasi-religiously and I love you style. I was hoping I could talk you into doing a special about handbag and outfit combinations. I feel that when I put together an outfit my handbag of choice is often forced. I would really like to see how you put handbags and outfits together.

Thank you Andra for reading and for writing to me!

This is a great topic as I actually really love handbags and I believe that can really add pattern/texture/shine to an outfit! Other than using a handbag/purse or tote for a day-to-day purpose (like schlepping my lunch or change of shoes for work), I like to use a handbag to as an extention of an outfit or sort of like putting a period at the end of the sentence.

Just like any accessory to fashion, it's personal taste that always should be the winner, but here are a few ways I would pair a purse with an outfit.

Large Print

Polka dots are a neutral in my world, along with leopard print and bat print. Hahaha! Since I'm wearing such a large print, I have paired the outfit with either the Edward Scissorhands handbag, due to the shine of the vinyl matching my belt and the one large graphic complimenting the black and white dress, or I would use a 'pop' of color and go with the purple sparkle Hold Fast Handbags purse. I wouldn't choose a bag with 'too much going on' in terms of hardware or print, yet seeing as I am wearing a large neutral print, playing with color, shine or sparkle makes for endless possibilities.

LBD

When it comes to a solid black dress, the sky is the limit in terms of pairings, but I like to put the focus on my shoes and accessories when I am wearing basic black. So I would either pair this casual LBD with a handbag with a pattern, like the Grey Doll black and white stripe handbag or with a novelty bag like the Coffin Handbag by Killstar. I love the coffin purse, because it adds some real visual interest and I like coffin-shaped things. Hehe!

Casual

I realize my definition of casual is a little different, yet I wanted to show what I would wear with this outfit if I took off the hat and replaced the shoes with little black sneakers or flats. I would wear the top/jacket/pants combo for casual days of running errands, going thrifting or just hanging out. I would wear a cross-body bag like the Wink-Wink cross body bag or the leopard bag, because I like to have both my hands free and this style tends to be more secure when maneuvering through crowds. I don't think the bag needs to match the outfit persay as it's more for function over fashion, but if you like to use this style of bag all the time (which I tend to use the most), I like to choose one that is fun and neutral that 'goes' with most everything.

There are so many more outfit combo, but I wanted to highlight three general looks to generate some ideas! I hope this helps Andra!

Are you a one bag sort of person? How do you like to pair your handbags with your outfits?

Thank you for reading!

We Bought a House!

This has been the 'big thing' we've been saving our money for, our first home! We're closing in a few days and I can't wait till it's all over. It's been stressful, time consuming and a bit frustrating, but my daydreams will soon become a reality and we can both relax. Boy do we have plans for the house *rubs hands together*.

We had been tossing around the idea of starting to look for a home in the up-and-coming area that is closest to Derek's tattoo shop, but we weren't expecting to get into a house until 2015. Well, this opportunity came and we snatched it up and we couldn't be happier.

It's pretty much the worst timing in terms of 1)I work in retail and it's busy 2)the holidays 3)almost the end of the year and 4)it's cold/almost Winter, BUT when something comes along in life that is positive we've learned to be flexible. So, with that being said, my blogging will probably slow down due to the house and the move.

Thank you for reading!

Happy 34th Birthday to Me!

Look who sent me birthday greetings?!
Okay, I'm just joking, but can't a gal dream?

It's sort of crazy that I'm 34, not because I'm feeling old or am ashamed of my age, it's just odd! I certainly don't want to go back to my 20s! I like being in my 30s, because less fuck's are given. Hahahha!

My birthday is a good excuse to wear this vintage 80s Robert Smith pin that my friend Jason gave me. He's also a huge Cure fan, so I was flattered when he gifted me this awesome pin!

My birthday outfit is nothing too exciting, but the dress is new as I seem to wear-out knit black dress as if I'm eating them. I like a good basic!

Well I'm off to work and then Derek has something planned for later. Dun dun dunnnnn!

Have a great day everyone! I wish I was having a birthday cocktail with all of you!

Bat Tunic and Crushed Velvet

I've had this tunic bat sweater by Sourpuss Clothing for months and though it's been worn about 8-10 times, this is the first time it's appearing on the blog. I really, really love this tunic.

pretending to be a bat?

I don't care for V-neck styles, so I am wearing a long sleeve t-shirt under the tunic along with my black crushed velvet leggings and a pair of tall boots that are quite a few years old - I sort of forgot about them while they lived at the back of the closet. I added some simple silver accessories to break up the pattern and all the black.

It's Wednesday and I'm already contemplating plans for my birthday on Friday. Christmas generally ruins my sparkle for 'let's celebrate'. Hrmmmm....

Favorites 2014

First of all, where the heck did this year go? I feel like it flew by! So, now that the year is almost at an end, I am picking a few of my favorite looks from 2014. I did the same for 2013 and I thought it was fun to share!

1)I love the Lizzy dress, perfect Peter Pan collar dress
2)The vintage pleated skirt got a lot of wear this year
3)A go-to outfit: skater skirt, t-shirt, vest and pointy boots

1)Dress is so simple, but I love shapeless black things!
2)Another simple outfit, but made for an breezy summer outfit
3)A personal favorite of the year. I love the hem line and the lace.

I am including a few outtakes, just because. *Wink*

Crushed Velvet Boots

I bought myself an early birthday present, these purple crushed velvet boots! I couldn't resist as they match my hair AND they were $24.99. Pretty impractical in the winter, but they are not meant (nor will be worn) for the snow.

Something about a crisp white shirt that I like. Simple, but worries me since I'm an accident prone slob. "So, I can see what you had for lunch". Haha!!!

No stains yet!

Bringing the Goth Bob Back

And I don't mean Robert Smith...even though I do love him so. I'm talking about a hair cut! I'm so happy with my hair and it feels nice to have a new style since I've been patiently growing in the sides of my hair.

The mullet is gone, even though I did love it, I welcome the short style that won't stick out of the back of my hair wraps.

I went with a textured bang that can be worn teased to the side or worn straight across. It makes me feel sassy! Hehe!

Casual look.
top and cardigan : H&M
leggings: Lip Service

I'm happy about the change as with a birthday around the corner and a soon-to-be New Year, it's all about embracing the new!

We Didn't Buy Anything...

...on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. As I have mentioned previously, Derek and I have a savings goal, so we've been ignoring all the emails about sales, coupons, etc. What we did not ignore is the sales at our local flea market.

Derek and I went out on Sunday and we did really good. I picked up a 1950s dark wood tall boy dresser and matching vanity with mirror and stool for $100. I love when a vendor takes your offer and even helps carry it out to your vehicle! I shop flea markets, thrift shops, estate and yard sales to furnish our place, because not only are we getting unique pieces, it saves us A LOT of money. We also love a good treasure hunt!

The vintage Halloween noise markers were both bought for a song and we even got 20% off! Score! Vintage Halloween items are always priced so high, so we often just stare at the vendor cases who have large collections for sale and we just cry Robert Smith tears. I spotted these two beauties and was told that the witch was broken, but we didn't care since they will most likely be put into a shadow box to be hung on the wall.

We also visited the record man and I got a Danse Society record for $1 and a Nash the Slash record for $5.50. Yesss! The record man even played some Spencer Davis Group for us while we shopped around, which made us very happy. It was funny when he got a few comments, "So you're listening to Mod music now". Hahaha! Sorry record man, we're not trying to mess up your garage rock Mojo. *Wink*

Check out Vix's awesome dining room make over for under 10 pounds. She's a vintage/upcyling/repurposing queen!

A Borrowed Bolo Tie and My Favorite Jacket

This striped jacket is one my favorite pieces in my closet, but it doesn't get much use. Pretty silly, huh? Hehe!

I borrowed Derek's bolo tie to wear with a collared button-up, wore the crossbones skirt over another skirt to give it more volume and added a massive bow to my head. All of this for Derek's Krampusnacht art show, which was a blast and a smashing success. I did not take any photos at the show, even though I brought my camera. D'oh! I was too busy looking at the art and socializing...*cough and drinking wine cough*.  All the artists did a great job and the tattoo shop looked as a gallery space, I'm very proud of my very talented husband and friends!

Cocktails, Anyone?

I can't deny my love for wine. Red wine, white wine, sweet wine, dry wine, I've tried them all! I also love a good cocktail, so naturally this cotton collared shirt dress lives in my closet.

The dress is sleeveless, so I added a long sleeve t-shirt under the dress along with my Tiki cardigan and black leggings, slouch socks and ankle boots. Voila! Now it's winterized!

I'm back on a head scarf kick this week. I like to give my hair a break from flat iron, tease, spray, repeat.

I'm also excited to share that Sary at The Walrus Room named me as one of her favorite alternative bloggers. I am so flattered! She's a doll and I really enjoy her blog, so check her out!

The Last Beat of My Heart : Das Ich

I've been re-discovering a lot of bands that I 'listened to death' from the late 90s/early 2000's. Das Ich will forever be one of my favorites!

Some Basics and a Tiger Print Scarf

Blogger darkens all my photos, it's annoying. Any who, today is a pretty basic outfit for a cold and wet day. I forgot about my studded peter pan collar pull over sweater and thought it would look great with my tiger print chiffon hair scarf.

Paired the sweater with a vintage black skirt, thrifted studded belt, cross print pantyhose and pointed studded booties. Basic, but it's all in the details.

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Holiday Style Blog

Yesterday I did a little style photo shoot for work for a holiday style blog and Derek was my lovely test model and assistant. Hahahaha! I love doing little projects as I get to mess around with my camera, photograph some lovely gals and I get to be creative and flex my stylist muscles. Feel the burrrrrrn!

One of my best friends, Melanie

Andrea, who is now my upstairs neighbor! Woo!

Judy, part of my Tiki crew and such a dear heart!

And me!

Alternate shot of the dress paired with my favorite vintage hat

It was a fun day, frustrating as I don't know what the heck I'm doing with lighting, but I am thankful for my models who took time out of their Sunday's to help out!

And I'm always thankful for my little helper elf. Yeah, I just had to.
Haha!!
