Throwback Thursday : Before Blogging, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate! I wanted to share an outfit from 2011 when Derek and I lived in an amazingly awesome turquoise 1966 high-rise apartment. This was before I started the Coffin Kitsch blog, but would take some outfit photos from time-to-time.

I'm longing to wear those vintage witchy boots again, they are in the bag to be taken to the cobbler. I love wearing vintage shoes and even though they are prone to needing repairs, I find them to be higher quality and worth the frustration. Nothing like literally walking to soles off, hahaha!

I hope you enjoy the day! Remember, if you're going to shop this week, shop small businesses!!!!

Brian Setzer Orchestra Holiday Show

Sunday we went to see the Brian Setzer Orchestra Holiday Show and it was awesome! We sat fourth row! This was also our Cats Like Us holiday celebration, which works out to have it early before all the holiday insanity ensues.

Brian Setzer (of The Stray Cats) sounded great and the musicians in his orchestra are all so talented. They all looked like they were having a blast together!

It was a perfect excuse to wear some rhinestones and things that sparkle. Even though it wasn't necessarily a "dressy event", it is always fun to make anything an occasion!

+dress: eShakti +rhinestone collar: vintage +burgundy sparkle tights: Target
+shoes: Two Lips Too

I'm realizing I am digging solid color tights, adds a little more variety to my closet so I can make even more outfit combinations.

My handsome fellow and I matched. I know, dork city. *Wink* Derek is trying out a beard for the first time ever and I have to say it looks good! I encouraged him to try something new as it never hurts to change it up from time to time. I call him weirdy beardy, hehe!

Have you ever seen the Brian Setzer Orchestra or The Stray Cats?

Things That Make Me Go Hrmmm : Adora BatBrat Video

I was inspired to post this video by Adora BatBrat to prompt discussion of style.

Working in a retro boutique our style's mostly focus on 40s, 50s and 60s clothing, but I don't just lump everyone together into a 1950s look. Hell, I'm a goth and I love retro cuts and styling because it is classic in the sense of the way the clothing is designed!

The pin up and retro rockabilly look has become more popular with "former goths" and I don't agree with Adora just generalizing that we have "lost goths to this look". We have had many discussion's (at work) as to why a lot of people make a transition to a more retro style and I personally believe it makes sense. If you want to (or have to) wear more color, still want a dramatic look and wear clothing that still makes you feel unique, retro clothing styles make sense to me. But, no one said that you can't infuse multiple styles into your own personal style! Keyword : personal!

I do have to express that anyone is allowed to change and evolve their look/tastes/style/etc, but it disappoints me when people look their noses down at styles (*cough goth cough*) that they think are immature or childish. Your style is not a costume, it's an extension of you and how you like to express yourself.

In closing, I'm not condemning Adora BatBrat for her opinion, but I thank her for inspiring me to write this blog.

Vampire Sweater, Stripes and Snowvember

Buffalo's had some severe winter weather and it's safe to say that it is a natural disaster. I feel so helpless as we live on the northern side of the city and we've had next-to-no snow, while about 15 minutes away friend's of mine have been trapped in over 6 feet of snow! There have been driving bans, the highways have been closed and there is no way to get to them to try and help them dig out or get food and supplies to them. Luckily I live in the 'City of Good Neighbors' and people are doing their best to help whomever needs assistance. This truly is a nightmare.

To show you how crazy the ban of lake effect snow was, this a time lapse video. The sky is just dumping snow.

For us in the north towns, it's been business as usual while we watch the news and get updates from friends and family.

I'm off to work shortly, but keeping my friends in my thoughts as the temperatures are rising and the snow will start to melt. Flooding is a major concern along with roofs collapsing. Ugh! I have lived in Buffalo my whole life and have been through many blizzards, but this is the worst I've ever seen!!!!

I know doing an outfit post is silly while I'm talking about this disaster, but my friend Barb remarked that she is enjoying my posts as she's dealing with this mess. So "hello!" to Barb and I hope she didn't run out of chocolate!

Winter Weather Advisory

There *was* snow on the ground yesterday, but it disappeared by the time Derek and I left to run some errands. Today is a different story, snow on the ground and lots of areas in the Southtown's of Buffalo got dumped on! Winter is here. Dun dun dunnnnn!

Since I live in a winter wonderland, I need a good coat. Though there are many that live in my closet, I was looking for a nice black coat to replace my black moto style coat that has a broken zipper (I've taken the coat to a few tailor's that won't replace the zipper or tell me there is nothing wrong with it...there is) Rant alert: Why do coats that are thin as paper with no lining and are made of crap polyester cost an average of $100?! Bah! I need to be warm!

I turned to searching at my favorite thrift store and scored this beautiful vintage wool and fully lined coat for $14. I had the coat dry cleaned for $11, switched out a broken button and Voila! Add a soft chenille scarf (handmade gift from my sister-in-law) and a thrifted wool beret with my isotoner gloves and I'm ready for this winter thing.

Bah humbug. This is when I start to hide in the Tiki room and pretend on I'm in a tropical paradise.

Drop Waist

I pulled out this vintage wool dress I got from my friend Julie Ann, put it on and felt really cute. I love the cut, the satin bow at the shoulder and the neckline. I was hesitant about the drop waist, but it looked good in the mirror..or so I thought.

After reviewing the photos, I was not happy with how the dress made my pear shaped body look. I know, I know, woman's bodies aren't fruit, but it's a way to describe my, 'small on top and larger on the botttom', body type. The dropped waist emphasis's my hips and belly area, which are two places I try to minimize as much as possible. Ugh! I got upset and changed my whole outfit 15 minutes before leaving for work. I was going to delete the photos and not share them....

I changed my mind and wanted to share. Why? Because I'm not perfect. I don't have a "perfect" body, but it's mine and that's all I know! I embraced trying a new style and though it's not the most flattering thing I've worn,  it made me happy. I should have just gone with the way it made me feel=cute and happy. The worst thing was that I let looking at a few photos effect me, made me feel that my body was ugly or lumpy or I just focused on one area.

Blah, I fell into the microscope of self judgement and forgot to see; how cute the outfit looked as a whole, how I liked my hair, my brows, or I'm smiling because Derek and I were chatting in the morning. Fashion is supposed to be a fun expression of yourself, not something to beat yourself up with or for it to bring you down. Hell, we also don't stand around all day looking like we're posed for pictures! Unless, that's your job...well then.

Our bodies are our temples and we should decorate it everyday for celebration to make ourselves happy without regret and judgement. -My new mantra.

Those Cannibal Girls All Taste the Best!

It's Music Thursday, yet I keep singing "Cannibal Girl" by Cult of the Psychic Fetus, because of the brooch I'm wearing, the Restless Native brooch from Charcoal Designs. I was very inspired by the brooch, so I paired my Kreepsville 666 skull necklace and earrings with the striped dress and jacket. Velvety leggings and slouch socks with cowboy boots are perfect for this Autumn day!

When Derek helps me take photos these are some of the results:

Picking almonds out of my teeth. LOL!

"SMILE!"

Hahahaha!! I have a hard time being serious when Derek is the photographer, than again I have way more fun. *Wink*

Kitsch Picks : So Perfectly Twisted

I am by no means a horror movie buff, but I do love Hellraiser and own a replicated Lament Configuration box. So, I think these pieces by So Perfectly Twisted are quite clever...."You solved the box, we came. Now you must come with us, taste our pleasures."

Muahahahaha! *cough cough* Ahem, I mean thank you for reading!

Defenders of Truth, Justice, Tequila, Tacos AND Beans!

First there was Holy Frijoles....

But then he was joined by his partner...Pink Taco.

Together they fit the injustices of everything that is brown and mushy...

They are the dynamic duo of Holy Frijoles and Pink Taco.
Defenders of truth, justice, tequila, tacos AND beans!

The back story behind Derek's costume-A few years our friend Jen was having a themed birthday party and Derek decided to create Holy Frijoles around his luchador mask. Mind you, Jen's birthday is not in October or near Halloween. LOL!!! He surprised me and everyone else with his costume, he's such a goof and I love it. Now, I know my characters name is a little crass, but I came up with Holy Frijoles counterpart, Pink Taco, via the way I normally come up with my whacky ideas, I just blurted it out. We both laughed about it and I made my character a reality this year and we went to a Halloween swing dance dressed these costumes.

I did learn that bodysuits are back in fashion, which worked for my costume, yet terrifies me a little bit. Oh, the 90s.

How was you Halloween? What was your costume?
