My Weekend Was Full of 80s Shirts

Thank you to everyone for your sweet comments about my last batty t-shirt outfit! I hope your weekend was filled with fun or relaxation or whatever makes you happy! I predicted that my weekend was going to be filled with friends, fun and Tiki and boy was I right! It was also filled with some radical 80s vintage shirts that sort of became a loose theme to this weekend's ensembles.

I'm wearing an over-sized charcoal and white cross top that I picked up last week for $1.50 at my favorite thrift store. I love a good button-up shirt, so I couldn't resist! The top is a vintage size 14 and I usually go for a 10/12, but I thought, "what the heck, I'll make it work", and I think I did with my trusty walking shorts. This outfit was nice and breezy for the humid and hot weekend in Cleveland, Ohio.

We were in Cleveland with our Tiki group to visit Porco Lounge & Tiki Room. *Wink*

On Sunday, a little tired mixed with a slight hangover brought us to my most favorite vintage warehouse, Sweet Lorain. I love the owner Red who always enthusiastically greets us while  looking for vintage treasures. I'm wearing a men's vintage shirt that I picked up at a sidewalk sale at Miss Josie's vintage in Buffalo. I love the shirt, but I realized after washing that it was missing a button at the bottom (no biggie) and had a rather large bleach stain on the front....d'oh! No problem, tied into a knot it went and paired with some cropped pants that I picked up (new with tags) for $5.50 while thrifting. I really am digging the Asian characters on the shirt!

These kitschy patterned cotton shirts saved me from sweltering in the hot/humid weather. I see a pattern emerging (get it, pattern...shirts. Heh. Heh), so I will be keeping my eyes open for more 80s-tastical summer wear. It makes me happy.

Wearing what you love, one article of clothing at a time.

Kitsch Picks : Freak Show Follies

Giving someone the 'evil eye' is a malevolent look that many cultures believe is able to cause injury or harm. Talismans used to protect against the evil eye are also called the 'evil eye', much like the pieces by Freak Show Follies. I enjoy beautiful jewelry that also may serve as a symbol for protection, luck, health, etc.

Merry Midsummer!

Happy Summer Solstice and Merry Midsummer! I spent the day working and then went to On the Wire in the evening. It was a wonderful evening to be hanging out on the club's patio and enjoy great music and friends.

I was excited to wear this Stevie Nicks-esque dress that I bought at a local boutique, The Allentown Dress Shoppe. I hadn't been in the store since the 90s when I would go in and drool over all the velvet and lace clothing. I could never afford to buy anything with my teenage part-time pay checks, so I was pleasantly surprised that the shop still carries some lovely lacey frocks. I think the 16 year old me would approve.

I rummaged through the jewelry box and pulled out the black necklace that adorns my collar, it's a very old piece that I cherish. I bought this necklace at a store in Toronto named Siren, which was a staple place (sadly now closed) to shop for goth clothing. Living in Buffalo and having Canada right across the river, Toronto was like our "big city" and I used to be in Toronto almost every weekend. In fact, on a Toronto trip to see Phantom of the Opera at the age of ten is when I saw my first glimpse of goth. I still remember two goth girls walking down the street wearing beautiful Victorian dresses with parasol's and long black hair. I poked my mom and said, "Look at those girls!". My mom replied, "How pretty, they are wearing Victorian clothing. You like Victorian things". I still remember how elegant their dresses looked while blowing in the wind. Sigh.

Of course I can't leave this blog post too sentimental. Here's a goofy pic! I had lipstick on my teeth and Derek's face just happen to be too perfect. Haha!!!

The Cupcake Dress Part Deux

I just can't be sad wearing this punk cupcake dress, in fact I think it makes me a wee bit giddy....and hungry. Here is the first way I styled this Folter Clothing dress.

I'm also pretty excited about my hair cut, my hair stylist friend Lauren does a great job! Though the mohawk is gone and has been replaced by a 80s influenced buzz and textured cut, I feel refreshed and excited about my hair. I love having parts of my hair shaved as I feel like it's very "me", though it's not a style for everyone (which people like to remind me all the time), it's a way I like to express myself.

Can you believe my red has lasted 5 weeks, though my new growth would tell a different story. *Wink* I love Matrix Socolor Red Red, best permanent red hair color I've used.

I wish you all a wonderful beginning to the weekend. I can't wait to see my out of town friends and let my hair down, so to speak. Hehe!!

A Favorite Shirt, New Shoes

I'm pretty happy to be going to my hair appointment, even though it appears that I'm miserable. Hehe!

This over-sized chiffon button up top from Forever 21 is high on the favorite list of separate's in my closet. It's breezy and pairs well with skirts and bottoms like these black bermunda shorts from New York & Company. I had searched high and low at the mall (three years ago) for walking shorts and was thankful when I found these. Derek is such a patient and encouraging shopping partner as he saw me go from store-to-store feeling defeated. I have to say I'm not looking to wear hip hugger booty shorts and I'm not looking to wear elastic band khaki shorts, so where's the middle ground? Who makes Misses clothing that fit well, is fashionable and doesn't make me look/feel like I should be eating a fish sandwich and drinking a Sanka at McDonald's?!

I'm being dramatic, but I digress.

Shoe's make me happy. Yes, yes they do. These zebra creepers by MIA are the most comfortable shoes I have bought in a long time. Thank you eBay for making my closet explode with shoes, but at a $2.99 auction win, I'll just have to come up with some creative storage ideas.

Happy Hump Day!

I Might Live In This All Summer

The Candy Skulls Jezebel dress by Jawbreaker. I have already worn the dress twice before I wore it to work yesterday...yes I washed it. Haha!

Let's see why I love it so much:
Black. Check!
Collar. Check!
Flowy and fun. Check!
Easy to wear. Check!

This dress will be on heavy rotation this summer, because the chiffon-like material is very cooling and looks great with no accessories like a belt or necklace. As much as I love to pile on the jewelry, sometimes when it's too hot and sticky I want as little as possible touching my skin. I also think that hair scarves and hair bows may be a permanent fixture on my head due to these humid days. Big hair+humidity=sad hair Hehe!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Black Hibiscus Muumuu

Phew, it's humid out! I didn't let that put a damper on my trip to stock up on some rum and other goodies for the Tiki bar. I was feeling the 'aloha spirit', so I decked myself out in this black vintage 1970s hand painted dress.

I fell in-love with the dress because...well, it's black. I nabbed it months ago from an etsy seller and I'm so happy I did! The over-size ruffles at the bust makes the dress really fun to wear, but I'm thinking a little nip/tuck might be in order as the straps kept falling down or shifting to reveal my bra straps. I hate strapless bras and avoid them when I can!

I'm hanging out in another little corner of our Tiki room/dining room for a variety in the back drop. I wish our living room had better natural light for photos, but sometimes you just have to make due! *Wink*

What's that black orb?!

It's a vintage swag lamp. Derek and I have a lamp issue, as in we love them a little too much. Hehe!

Ohhh, I think it's time to sample some of that rum I bought.....

I Dream of Shoes : eBay Seller Apparel Save

I bought these cute booties for $8.99

I came across the eBay store Apparel Save while looking for a replacement pair of shoes and next thing I knew I had ordered four pairs of different shoes! The prices are insanely low that I just couldn't control myself and I regret nothing. Nothing I say!!! A lot of the shoes are close out's, but it's worth having a look to possibly score something you'll love at a great price.

Sneaky Tiki Preview

I wrote a little preview blog over at the Cats Like Us blog about some new Hell Bunny tropical pieces that I nabbed before it will be available online this Thursday. I love my job and getting to see all the new items (and often help choose what we sell) before our customers is definitely one of the many perks!

My eyes may have bugged out of my head when I saw the Maui Tropical Crop Top and the Maui Tropical 50s Skirt. Though I love my vintage muumuu's and 60s barkcloth tops, yet they aren't always practical to wear on a day-to-day basis, so I really enjoy that clothing brands like Hell Bunny is making modern clothing with tropical prints. Besides, the back ground is black and I can't say no to that!

Derek joined me for a cocktail!

My first choice wouldn't be a crop top, but hey you gotta live a little. I know the skirt will get worn a lot more with a solid black top or t-shirt, but I think the crop top will be cute worn over a black tank dress. Options, I like options.

Goths in love...with Tiki too!

It Just Feels Right

I *finally* hemmed my first eShakti dress purchase that was in the sewing pile. I unfortunately had to take off a lot of fabric seeing as the length of the dress hit me mid-calf which was just way too long for me. I loved the grey panel on the bottom of the dress, but I think I might not have paid attention enough to the description and got a dress that just wasn't hitting me in all the right spots...until now!

I am pretty proud of myself as I got the hem pretty even and straight! Working with jersey knits are not something I look forward to, but with a little patience I have a dress that 'just feels right'. My shirt dress collection is growing and I can't deny that I love it! So comfortable and versatile!

Have you ever modified something that made you very proud?

Dem Bones!

When I got dressed on Monday I wasn't paying attention to my shoe choice as Derek and I left the house to run some errands. While we were sitting down to a nice lunch on the patio at Cafe' 59, I realized I was covered in bones from my dress to my toes! Heheehehe!

It was very windy as a thunderstorm was about to roll in, but we managed to dodge the rain and enjoy a leisurely Monday. Due to both Derek and my work schedules our Sundays and Mondays acts like our weekend, so I generally choose a comfy outfit combo like; a dress, leggings and little flats.

The X-Ray Doll Parts dress by Sourpuss Clothing is so comfy and cute! Oh yeah! Flashback to another way I styled this dress.

Thank you for stopping by!

"Ohhhhhhh Belllllaaaaa"

Yep, wearing another one of my circle skirts, I guess this was just the silhouette of choice for this weekends outfit's.

During the great 'influx of t-shirts', I refolded and sorted the t-shirt drawer and re-discovered Dracula aka Bela Lugosi. He's undead you know. Undead. Undead. Undead.

Photo taken right after tattooing

I also have been healing a fun little addiction to the collection, the Eye of Horus (also known as the Eye of Ra) behind my left ear. This tattoo did not hurt at all, it was one of the oddest sensations of feeling the vibrations of the tattoo machine (and hearing it, loudly) without the sting of the needles. Derek said it's an area that (with most people) is easy to tattoo. I'm always amazed at the whole tattooing experience when it's a new body part that I'm having permanently altered.

(Whoa, so many parentheses while written in parentheses. Hehehe!)

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!!!
