This week's Kitsch Picks I wanted to share my love of Period Dramas, which include some based off history and/or books. If it's a period piece set in Victorian England, I will want to watch it. In fact, I will probably watch it over and over again. I love getting lost in the characters, costuming and drama. If there's a little romance in there, I will probably tear up. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone!
Some of my favorites include:
Elizabeth
Elizabeth: The Golden Years
From Hell
Interview with the Vampire
Pride & Prejudice
Little Women
Sense and Sensibility
Dracula
Emma
The Age of Innocence
The Young Victoria
and so many more.............
I also like to watch BBC mini-series', I'm always hunting on Netflix for new ones or just re-watch favorites. Downton Abbey just ended, so I'm going to have wait for season 4, hrmph!
Do you like period movies and/or mini-series?
Thank you for reading!

Sense and Sensibility was the first movie I ever bought - on VHS no less! Then Hugh Grant was revealed as the nasty man he is, and the movie lost some of its charm...
ReplyDeleteEven though I think many BBC series are far better than movies, I hate waiting for new episodes.
Oh yes, good ol' VHS...I still watch my VHS tapes ;)
DeleteI still have quite a few of my and my boyfriend's old VHS (the ones that didn't go mouldy) but my VHS player seems to be dead now. Sigh. BBC is often so much better than most movies, BBC dramas are one of my fave things ever!
DeleteLove it! Period dramas are what got me into costuming :) I wanted to wear stuff like that, so I experimented & studied & kept trying. I have most of the ones you listed on DVD & love to watch them over & over again (esp. while sewing).
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool!!!! You're so talented my dear Miss Trystan!
DeleteI love several of the films on your list, and of course Downton Abbey. I have a few others to recommend: Lark Rise to Candleford, Cranford, The Way We Live Now, Little Dorritt, Bleak House, and House of Eliott. Enjoy! ps. I love your blog! I've been reading for several months and love all of your posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! =D
DeleteI haven't seen Lark Rise to Candleford, Cranford or House of Eliott, now I'm on a quest! Thank you!
House of Eliott is available on YouTube. probably not legally, but it's there. Just don't tell YouTube. lol.
DeleteI think the website ate my reply so I will try again... I love costume dramas, and love several of the ones on your list. I have a few to mention, in case you've not seen them: Bleak House, Little Dorritt, The Way We Live Now, Cranford, Lark Rise to Candleford, The House of Eliott, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest (Colin Firth, Rupert Everett version).
ReplyDeleteI got your first one ;) Thank you for the suggestions!
DeleteI love An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest! Bleak House was really good and The Way We Live Now, I will have to check out the others :)
Oh man, my mother and I love love LOVE period dramas. We used to have a "Jane Austen" movie night every weekend together! Ah such happy times =)
ReplyDeleteWe found one that we didn't expect we'd actually love; it's called Lost in Austen. I don't know if it's in the instant queue still, but if you've never seen it you may even enjoy it too!
Jane Eyre, and Painted Veil made my ball my eyes out...
I absolutely love them! However, I tend to be a bit of a sticker for historical and literary accuracy, which probably stems from my vocation. I'm dying to see Lincoln! And I've recently finished "The Men Who Built America" mini-series on the History Channel. I loved their series on the Medicis as well. I adore high seas stuff so "Master and Commander" and the "Horatio Hornblower" series are my favorites! I have a nerd crush on Horatio Hornblower BIG TIME. hehehehe ...
ReplyDeleteI've heard really good things about Lincoln!
DeleteI love period dramas. In fact, I watched Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice this past weekend. :) I have to admit I roll my eyes at the romance sometimes. I'm a jaded old cynic. But the costumes and settings are fantastic, and I love the sound of the accents.
ReplyDeleteI'm a closet romantic, shhhhh!
DeleteMarianne never deserved Col. Brandon.
DeleteI have to say period dramas are not my cup of tea; but... Little Women (and its sequel) is one of the books I read the most when I was a child. I also watched the cartoon :D I was really into it. :)
ReplyDeleteA cartoon? Wow, I never knew!
DeleteI'm a fan of "Dangerous Beauty."
ReplyDeleteOh yes indeed I do :) I loved the BBC series Pride and Predjudice. The House of Elliot is a wonderful serie with lots of flapper fashion :)
ReplyDeleteLittle Women was one of my favourite movies and books as a kid! Also Pride and Prejudice and other BBC costume dramas, probably a huge influence on the way I dress now! :P Well, you all know I am Victoriana and Steampunk obsessed so I won't go on! :P
ReplyDeleteLove this post and the comments! Now I have a bunch of titles to hunt down! : )
