Kitsch Picks : Favorite Auxiliary Magazine Editorials

My friends over at Auxiliary Magazine have launched a crowd funding kickstarter project to take the magazine to the next level and they need all our help! Auxiliary Magazine focuses on alternative fashion, lifestyle and music, they have been producing content for five years and still going strong! 

I took part of the magazine for the first three as the Fashion Editor and in-house fashion stylist. I got to work with a lot of amazing talent, designers and contributed my fashion vision to the magazine. It was a lot of hard work, but I learned a lot and created many fun memories as well as images and articles.

Boudoir-December 09'

Boudoir was inspired after I watched Marie Antoinette (for about the hundredth time) and finding these amazing masks on etsy by Sweet Ruin. A lot of my inspiration comes from a single piece I find from a designer and then build a whole "fashion script" for an editorial. This shoot was a lot of fun as not only is Agata a great model (I think this was the first time she was featured in Auxiliary), but building such a soft and elegant look, with a great team, has produced these beautiful images.

Monster Mash Up-October/November 10'

Before Coffin Kitsch was a blog, I made kitschy handmade pillbox hats and some of my pieces were featured in Monster Mash Up! Styling this editorial 'mash up' with so many kooky spooky prints was just too much fun! The bright and bold prints mixed with some retro elements makes this another personal favorite editorial. I think both Jennifer and I own both of those Dungaree Dolly purses. Hehe! 

Anticipation-December/January 10'/11'

I loved this editorial as I got to dress three models up in some fancy holiday finery. Ben, Kerry and Sarah all looked so elegant and relaxed with each other on camera, and behind the scenes we all just had a blast. I really enjoy working with a crew who gel well together, as there is a lot that goes on to produce the images you see in any magazine, newspaper, music video, etc. The final results involve a lot of talent and labors of love!

Saturnine-April/May 11'

I got to work with Sarah once again on the editorial Saturnine which involved a lot of lovely mesh and lace. I love how Sarah's hair was such a bold contrast from the black ensembles, as her hair style gave the editorial a deathrock-esque edge.  I was so lucky to get to work with some iconic gothic fashion designers like Kambriel and Rose Mortem, their designs are so elegant and darkly romantic.

Show and Tell : Neck Ruffles and Hats

neck ruffle compliments of Misfit Chic

I stumbled upon this photo of me goofing around with my Misfit Chic neck ruffle paired with one of my favorite vintage hats and I got to thinking about how much I adore the look of neck ruffles and hats. When I had more hair, I used to adorn my head with hats, fascinators and hair decor, I think it adds so much variety to outfit possibilities and it's just fun to dress up!

The thought then led me to a shoot I styled with my talented friend Luke Copping, in which I paired this gorgeous Hey Sailor! magenta top hat with this light blue Misfit Chic neck ruffle. I really love using color when I style as it gives me the opportunity to explore outside my own personal style.

Sarah Wintle is one of my favorite local models to work with, she's even featured in the current Auxiliary Magazine's Rose Mortem designer spotlight as one of the models! How cool is that!?

I really enjoyed working with both Kabriel and Rose Mortem pieces to produce Saturnine, so romantic with flowing fabrics, yet a subtle edge with Sarah's 'pop' of pink hair color and cut.

This is CorpGoth Mid-Status Report : Love What You Do

Yeah, what the hell do you do Meagan? Well, over the past few years I've been working as a stylist, blogger, lead retail sales, and running my own etsy shop. Though I'm not rolling in the dough, so to speak, yet I am really doing what I love!

It's been a long road to get to the place where I am right now, lots of frustration, tears, confusion and self-doubt. I always loved fashion, in fact I wanted to go to school for menswear and got excepted into the F.I.T fashion department at age 17, but stayed home and went to school in Buffalo. Unfortunately I never finished any sort of degree, but had been working since the young age of 14, so I had built up a lot of life skills and good work ethic. Let's just say I didn't do things easily in my youth.

After working a few really good paying management jobs, I got sick of retail and went into office work....which I was unhappy with, I just felt like I am floating into the sea of 'I'm just working to pay the bills'. During this time a group of my friend's talked about starting up an alternative fashion magazine, later named Auxiliary Magazine and the rest (as they say) is history. The magazine helped me hone in on my love for fashion, from retro styling to punk to goth to everything in between, a lot of times meshing them together. Fashion is art after all!

My experience with Auxiliary Magazine built me a great portfolio, introduced me to a lot of great designers and encouraged me to work on other stylist projects. My only regret was not being more boastful about it, I'm not an egotistical person, but I do believe that a person should be proud of their accomplishments. Perhaps one of my downfalls is being too modest. I'm an awesome stylist, there I said it. Haha! After 3 years of being the Fashion Editor, I decided to concentrate on my own path, but I still support my friend's as they continue to put out amazing work!

So, there you have it dear readers, a little insight as to why I love what I do! I really enjoy blogging, sewing for Coffin Kitsch, and helping people look and feel good. Plus I get to work at Cats Like Us and play with pretty dresses all day, can't complain about that!

Show And Tell : Boudoir Editorial

I really enjoy styling for photo shoots and though it's been a while, I wanted to share one of the many fashion editorials that I am proud to have been a part of while working with Auxiliary Magazine.

This shoot was based around the designer Sweet Ruin's gorgeous hand made masks, I wanted to portray something soft and feminine with an 18th Century historical feel. It was fun to have the challenge of using a soft pastel color palette when styling this shoot. I always enjoy styling a shoot that is outside of my own personal style as it gives me the opportunity to have a creative outlet with fashion. I really love how the whole team worked together and our model, Agata, is always a pleasure to work with.

Gloomth Designer Feature : Auxiliary Magazine Part II

It's still a little surreal to see photos of myself in a publication and online, even though I've worked Auxiliary Magazine as a stylist for three years! It's a great crew behind the scenes that creates amazing images, the model and the photographer always get praised, yet it's the make-up artists, hair stylists and wardrobe and creative directors that help to pull it all off. I don't look this good from day-to-day. Haha! It was a hot one that day, but I'm glad my non-model modeling helped to feature Gloomth's awesome designs.

There is also a great interview about Gloomth featured in the magazine, be sure to read as Miss Vanity Kills is a good friend of mine and an excellent interviewer.

I was extremely nervous as I am far from a model, yet luckily there was an amazing team that helped me look snazzy! Styling As A Stylist

I wanted to share some insight into some of the projects I've worked on over the past few years. I worked on a great project, Auxiliary Magazine, in which a bunch of friends got together to create a spin on what alternative fashion, culture and lifestyle meant to them. One of the reoccurring projects I was most proud of was the style article in which I paired my writing with an outfit I pieced together with clothing, accessories and footwear. It was a lot of fun and often challenging as I was limited to the designers I would find (and were willing to be featured) that would fit my vision. I would spend hours upon hours scanning etsy, the internet, blogs, etc. to find the unique independent designers who's creations needed to be seen by everyone! I like to root for the "underdog" as there are so many talented people who need to be recognized and praised. These images below are in no particular order as they appear in several issues of Auxiliary Magazine, all images were photographed and composed by Jennifer Link, editor-in-chief of the magazine.

Sorry that the photos are so large, but I think they look best viewed this way even though it doesn't work well with my blog layout. I'm using photobucket with the impending doom of blogger charging us for photo usage and storage once we reach a certain limit. Photobucket is frustrating and archaic!!!
