Aloha from Lake George

Luau dinner outfits!

Just a quick "Aloha" as we just got back from Lake George, NY and Ohana: Luau at the Lake. I'm tired from driving, but had a nice time with a few of our gang. I'm happy to be home and glad we all made it home in once piece. More photos and talk of the event in another post!

Natural Wave

After re-purpling my hair on Tuesday, I decided to let my hair air dry and see if I wanted to wear my hair wavy. Despite a few pin curls to shape the curl/wave around my hair, this is all natural.

It's a nice change from all the serums, blow drying and flat ironing. I forget that I have longer hair (for me!) in a very familiar style, as over the years I've had a lot of bob hair cuts.

What is your natural hair texture like? Do you alter it on a daily basis or ever wear it natural?

R.I.P Don Featherstone

Well, I'm pretty sure you may have not heard of Don Featherstone, but I'm pretty sure you've seen pink plastic lawn flamingos. Those kitsch-tastic birds who have become the ultimate token of tackiness. Heck, John Waters even named a movie after them, Pink FlamingosDon Featherstone was the creator of the pink plastic flamingo shaped lawn ornaments and he recently passed away at age 79 after battling a lengthy disease.

Our front garden. Pardon the weeds.

I don't remember how my pink flamingo fascination started, perhaps it's due my love of airstream trailors and everything that involves tackiness and kitsch. Like anything that starts off as a joke amongst friends, it has turned into full blown pink flamingo mania!

Make up case: gift from Judy and Mike
DeTiki carved purse: Derek drunkenly bought (from a past Ohana)
Flamingo blanket: gift from Terri
Charcoal Designs brooch: gift to myself
Hair clips: gift from Miss Natalie from Goody Two Shoes

So, thank you Don for making this world that much more delightful with your pink plastic creations. I hope you rest in peace.

Six Days Till Ohana!

Well it's now six days.....

We've been prepping and planning for our drive to Lake George, NY to attend Ohana: Luau at the Lake! An intimate Tiki gathering filled with music, friends and RUM! We haven't attended the last two years, so we're excited to see how the event has grown since the first time we attended in 2010.

Our First Ohana. 2010

Our Second Ohana, 2011

Our Third Ohana, 2012

And my hair changed every single year! Hahahaha!

So excited to be attending once again and I hope to see some of the characters that we've met through this awesome Tiki event. Alooooooha!

Oh, The Humidity!

The humidity has been terrible, so I'm not going to fight it with taking a flat iron to my hair. My hair has a mind of it's own and the natural wave has taken over....and I'm been bobby pinning my bangs to the side since I want to grow them longer. Patience. Patience. Mehhhh.

Anyways, I've been trying to write about this dress since I got it months ago. I bought the Skeleton Dress from hottopic.com and I LOVE it. It's is soft, flowy and easy to throw on for a day of errands. I have to admit I was not expecting much when I ordered the dress, but now I have to stop myself from wearing it everyday! I ordered a medium seeing as Hot Topic is a junior's clothing store, but I could have sized down to a small as the material has a lot of 'give'. It's been great going through the wash and the hemline is finished, so no fraying!

The long cardigan I'm wearing (which is also from Hot Topic, a few years ago) is made of terrible cheap lace, which is full of tiny elastic "hairs" poking out of the sleeves. I still wear it, as I love the idea of a flowy long line cardigan layered over dresses.

Ya win some, ya lose some.

Just Life in General

One corner of the living room

The next few weeks and into the whole month of July are going to be very busy for Derek and I. We are going on vacation, have my parents coming to stay with us for two weeks and other various social gatherings and celebrations. We have been focusing on house projects including giving homes to parts of our collection.

Edward Gorey prints now hang in the guest room. I found a pair of lady lamps at a junk store for a steal. The only bummer is that one is without a shade, but luckily I scored a clip-on lamp shade off eBay for a nice deal and I'm going to DIY it myself. We have plans for the lamps *rubs hands together*. PS-The walls were already painted purple when we bought the house, I added a silver wall to brighten up the room. We hung damask curtains on either side of the bed because....well why not!

My replica shrunken head finally has a home in a dome! Hehe! The candle stick is acting as the display base and soon the bottom of the dome will be painted black, so happy to finally display Derek's Yule gift to me. He bought this for me a few years ago and had the artist make the shrunken have a "death hawk". I love that silly guy of mine!

All this house work builds up a thirst! Sunday we hung out in the 'Hut' and enjoyed a few cocktails with dinner. It's nice have our own little slice of tropical paradise.

How was your weekend?

A Slice Of Life

I love pizza. In fact, I think I'm slightly obsessed. So when Derek started drawing this Bauhaus inspired pizza slice, I knew it had to be permanently on me! This newest piece is on my upper thigh right above my Siouxsie Sioux portrait. Even though this is the first sitting, I had to share this awesomely fun piece.

It's The Pits

The Pits as in this dress digging into mine and now I realize why it's been sitting in the closet unworn. It's a darn shame that after a day at work I'm recoiling in armpit pain.

Pardon the weird lighting.

I really like the purple leopard panels on this Dead Threads dress, so much so I removed the weird corseting that lined the sides so that you could see the pattern better. What can I say, I love full skirts.

I've been feeling a bit melancholy, so the mood of these photos seems fitting. For as much as I seem like the outgoing type, I often retreat into my own head and let the feelings overwhelm me. It's my cross to bear, being that I seem like an extrovert, but in reality I am quite introverted. I find myself going in ten different directions and I'm feeling a little burned out.

Lovely Shrunken Head brooch from Charcoal Designs

I think it's the red wine and Cocteau Twins talking, as I will return to my cheerful self shortly. I don't want this blog to turn into the Gloomy Gus News.

Wearing Whatever the 'F' You Want

Lists. Advice. What to do. What not to do. It's enough to make someone's head spin. A lot of these lists that I have read focus on women and age and I've basically come to one conclusion: You're not allowed to have any fun after thirty. My reaction: Giant. Middle. Finger.

How about making a list encouraging women (and all people) to wear what makes you feel good. Why is age always the focus? Why do we need to stop wearing things that bring us joy? Just to blend into the background? Why are certain things considered juvenile, rather than celebrated as self expression? Sigh.

I am met with these questions almost on a daily basis as someone who works in a retail environment. There are women who come in and are so self judgmental and self depreciating that it makes me so incredibly sad for them. I've met women who tell me that they can't wear a fun printed dress, because their friends are going to make fun of them! WHAT?! My brain nearly exploded. I secretly want to tell them that they can come hang out with me in their fun dresses and we can have a party. Hehehe!

Now, I'm not opposed to advice and those who seek it out. I have read many helpful articles on the art of dress and use those elements for myself as well as when others ask for my help. It's help, not set-in-stone rules. These 'DON'T WEAR THIS OR YOU WILL BE OSTRACIZED FROM THE WORLD' type advice=nope, not listening.

I guess this is all coming from a gal who has always been rebellious, like keeping my hair blonde for years when I was told I could never truly be goth without black hair. Pffffffft.

Life is too short to wear things you hate and in turn hating yourself in them. Embracing age is not a bad thing, in fact I think it is liberating and a part of the journey of life. The voices that emphasize age need to shut the hell up and mind their own business.

Craaaaaaaaaamps Style!

Ok, I know it is "Cramp Stomp", but gold leopard print makes me think of The Cramps and their amazing style! Anywho, I am wearing a work outfit featuring this little cropped sweater by Sourpuss Clothing with my favorite thrifted skirt. I probably write that it is "my favorite" every time I wear it in a blog post. I just can't help it! Hehehe!

Those earrings! Those giant earrings! Julie Ann picked them up at a jewelry sale for me and they are perfectly obnoxious, just the way I like em'. Simple, but extremely versatile for me.

Giant sweep of the skirt, one of the many reasons why I love this 80s skirt. The day I can't wear it any more, I will be seriously bummed. Wait, I don't care, I will make it live forever! Muahahahahahaa!!!!

On a total random note, Sary of The Walrum Room tagged me on Facebook and let me know I'm on the 15 Unrivalled Goth Fashion BlogsI am humbled and flattered. I always think it is really cool to read how other people view me and my blog. Speaking of blogs, please visit two blogs I have been really enjoying and they deserve to be added to your reading lists, Kriss Poison and Von Monstra. Enjoy!

And It Rained All Day

vintage koi tea timer blouse : ebay

It rained all day on Sunday, but it was nice and warm in our Tiki "hut".

The rain didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves with a few guests for an impromtu gathering. It was a good excuse to wear my "new" koi fish tea timer style blouse, which I fell in love with while casually borrowing on eBay. Fits me perfectly!

hair flower slapped together by me. vintage earrings from a friend

I've been slowly adding shirts to my Tiki wardrobe, which stands out like a blaring tropical ray of sunshine amongst all the black. Tropical patterns make me smile, Polynesian Pop makes my heart sing and it's all just a part of what I love, hence the name Coffin Kitsch. *Wink*

Staying Up Late and Nachos

I was smiling, I swear!

Saturday night we went out to a random alternative dance night that was at Ohm Ultra Lounge, which is the bar/club which we used to have On the Wire. (On the Wire was the post punk/goth event I threw with my friend Danielle).

I figured it was a great excuse to tease out the hair, put some black brows and go out dancing!

I didn't cut my hair (and the lighting is making it look pink), I just styled it in a different way. I used A LOT of hair spray, since I was fighting with the rain and humidity.

The night was better attended than I had anticipated. We hung out, chatted with owner and the security guard, and then went out for NACHOS!!! I've been really eating well, (also cutting down on my alcohol in-take) so eating junk food like nachos was a real treat. Mmmmm, especially from ETS which was "our place" we would go to after going clubbing every weekend.

Now I'm thinking about those nachos all over again. So good!

How was your weekend?
