Six Days Till Ohana!

Well it's now six days.....

We've been prepping and planning for our drive to Lake George, NY to attend Ohana: Luau at the Lake! An intimate Tiki gathering filled with music, friends and RUM! We haven't attended the last two years, so we're excited to see how the event has grown since the first time we attended in 2010.

Our First Ohana. 2010

Our Second Ohana, 2011

Our Third Ohana, 2012

And my hair changed every single year! Hahahaha!

So excited to be attending once again and I hope to see some of the characters that we've met through this awesome Tiki event. Alooooooha!

The Continental Reunion

The Continental has been mentioned in my blog before, but it is always on the tips of Buffalo natives tongues, the haunt that was our well loved club. It was a two story gloomy music venue that featured a band area with a bar (I remember the old oval shaped bar! Ha!) and the infamous upstairs with; 70s disco lighting, mirrors by the dance floor, mens bathroom (which got remodeled, thank goodness), and an upstairs bar and smoking (and unsafe!) back balcony.

Yes, I was a mirror dancer

The club itself was pretty run down and well, flat out disgusting, yet it was home every Friday and often Saturdays for many....many...many years. I made friendships and enemies there, I drank, I danced, I cried and yelled, I met some of my best friends there and it was home. Though The Continental is long gone, the memories still haunt our alternative scene as there hasn't been a place that's brought so many different types of people so easily, and had been doing it for years! I saw a lot of great bands and even performed on the downstairs stage. *Cue memories*

There have been many 'Continental Reunions', which had been sorta like beating the ground where the dead horse lays, but this one attracted more than 700 people! It was so crowded, it was positively INSANE, but worth it to see some old faces and look at everyone smiling, reconnecting and creating The Continental atmosphere that we all craved. It's not the place that makes a scene it's the people in it who create the energy and memories.

Needless to say it was weird when I bought a magnet with our beloved clubs logo design, so odd to be buying merchandise commemorating our defunct club, but I just had too.

Don't Be Ashamed of Your Style Evolution

Photo explosion

I see a lot of talk in the internet land about people's 'baby bat' years, or how they came into their particular style and it got me thinking about my own style evolution. I wasn't born a bat (darn it!), so thus I never identified with the baby bats years. *insert humor*. I understand internet terminology a little better now than I did a few years, but I still 'don't get it', in other words: who cares (about the labels).

middle picture : high school

I personally love old photos of people and where they were, what they were doing and who with, it's also fun to see their style at that period in time. It's all part of life, evolving and thus fashion generally is a part of it! I know I get a good chuckle out of my old photos and it also brings back a lot of great memories.

I did some weird things to my hair; like turning it four different colors on accident, shaving it myself : badly, wearing some odd fake hair combination. I also experimented with red/silver eye makeup which made me look possessed, waxed off part of my eyebrow, wore too much glitter.....all over me, etc. I'm actually laughing out loud, because I'm not ashamed, it's all apart of the girl you see today.

I used to put rules on myself like; I'm never going to wear low boots with a mini skirt (haha, broke that), I hate pointy shoes (I love those pointy witchy boots!), I won't wear flat shoes to the club ("yeah right", say the old lady knees), I'm always going to wear a collar as my neck is weird (I next to never wear one any more). My tastes changed, my lifestyle needs changed and I evolved.

But some things may never change, I still love; platforms, stripey tights, hair wraps, shiny accessories, patterned bottoms, leggings, buckle boots, etc. I will always have a soft spot for certain things, even though I may not currently wear particular styles.

I'm not trying to be a preachy jerk face, I'm just saying that it's okay to evolve, it's okay to have those "OMG what was I wearing photos". It's all a part of you and your life, enjoy yourself. :)

Have you experimented in your style evolution?

Happy New Years Eve!

Derek Art (one of my favorite artists)

I hope everyone has something fun planned with the special people in their lives or at least get to enjoy yourself this evening! I can't believe it's going to be 2013, I remember celebrating when it was going to be 2000! Yet I gotta ask, Where are all the flying cars? The movies and books lied to us! Hehe!

Making New Year's resolutions seems to be on a lot of people's minds, but to be honest I don't believe in them, yet making goals is something I can get behind. So here are mine:

-Start sewing clothing for myself, baby doll dresses and simple skirts. I know I can do it, but I've been scared since a sewing meltdown I had over ten years ago. Eeeeek! It involved cutting out a pattern, then my  machine breaking and I went into a fit of rage. Yeah.....I'm a lot calmer of  person now.

-Make a custom bar for the Tiki room and rearrange EVERYTHING. I want to be able to display all our Tiki mugs (I'm panicking just thinking about it). We're obsessed and it needs to more organized.

-Become more awesome and tacky as I want a 60s gold lam'e dress. (I had to come up with something else, I like things in 3's)

Not too bad, huh? What are your personal goals this year?

Now I will leave you with some fun photos with friends from this past year, 2012........

Taking A Step Back In Time

Feeling inspired by Sophistique Noir's A Very Vampy Valentine's Day blog, I decided to share some old photos of yours truly. Most of these photo's are from 2000-2006 era which will include some interesting makeup, hair and fashion choices. Many people are ashamed of their old photo's, but I love to see the progression of one's own tastes as well what we did (to ourselves) in our youth.

You can laugh with, errrr, I mean AT me....I don't mind at all!

Photos from age 19-22:

Naked arms!

Happy to have met Melotron

Photos ages 22-25-I REALLY started loving PVC (vinyl), big hair and dreads a little too much.
