To Goth Or Not To Goth : It Seems To Be A Serious Question

I have been asked a few times why I don't talk about being a goth, my opinions on the goth subculture, etc., to be frank, it's like pissing in the wind. There are tons of other bloggers and websites of people who rant and rave about 'what goth is' or 'what goth means to them', and though I enjoy a little chuckle now and then, but I don't feel I need to try and recruit people to my opinion. I'm a girl, I wear a lot of black, I listen to goth music, so there ya go! I'm happy in my hair spray-filled world! I will say that I think people take themselves way too seriously and thus put silly rules upon the lifestyle and subculture, life's not about living in a black box.....though that describes my apartment. *Wink*

Oh, they are so cute!

I do enjoy people's opinions and doing the research into things that they love and if they have a passion for goth, well it's relevant to my interests and I sure will give it a read. The snobbery, elitism and petty crap is in every 'scene', but for some reason goths love to make outsiders feel so uncomfortable that the goth scene doesn't prosper. I know we love dead things, but come on! I'm not saying I wasn't guilty of snobbery in my youth, but as an old lady in my 30s (haha, slap me now!) I've realized to just relax and be more excepting. My life is filled with things other than bats, spiders and Robert Smith. Shocking, I know!

So to goth or not to goth, it's not a serious question, it's a matter of enjoying life and just make yourself happy whether you're a cyber goth or a deathrockabillytikivictoriangoth <---that's me! Haha!!!!

Thanks for reading!

  1. Great post! I used to be very passionate about my opinion of what goth is but I've decided to keep my thoughts more to myself since, as you say, it's like pissing in the wind. And even though I do have very strict opinions on what is goth and what is not I understand that other people have equally firm believes that differ from mine. :) And I don't like judging people just because they don't think like I do.

    1. I am definitely passionate about goth and the lifestyle, heck it's my lifestyle, but like you said, I don't judge people just because they don't think like I do.

  2. Word! I kinda think that talking about goth is something one does when they're young - bec. you get really tired of it after a few years :-)

  3. I'm pretty open with my opinion that if you listen predominantly to goth music, you're a goth (regardless of how you dress) ... Meagan, you're a lot more 'goth' than a lot of people I know (whether you like it or not!) ;)

  4. Meagan, you should always feel free to share your opinions on the subject. Our culture and lifestyle are so misunderstood. We'd actually love to hear more from you about your role in the fashion industry as we grow our own brand at vampirefreaks.com. Contact us at lcaplan@couplescompany.com and we'll update you on our fashion, music and other plans within the community. Have a dark and gloomy day!

  5. I found your blog by accident. I have always wanted a Gothic garden. I found Insomniacs Attics blog and loved her garden and everything else on her blog. She follows your blog so now I do too and love it. I love your clothes and your outlook. I am 48 year old women who wears clothes in outrageous sorbet colors that do not occur in nature. There are a few black things in my closet but probably because they were on sale. Even though I still try to plant black flowers, the garden went into a different direction. Everything in it is white and I plan on building a grotto with a statue of Mary in it. Not sure what my point is. Your a person with a great blog who is goth I guess?
