I Wanna Be a Part Of It, New York! New York!

Photobucket

Oh, how I love adventures! Derek and I took an extended weekend trip to New Jersey to visit his family and spent a day in New York City going shopping, visiting friends and sipping on Tiki drinks. The weather was fantastic (other than the 93% humidity which makes for sad hair), observing people in their street fashions was quite refreshing and inspirational for me and going to Trash and Vaudeville

While walking around St. Mark's street I saw a few punks and other general weirdo type's which also made me slightly giddy, don't get me wrong I am not a country bumpkin, yet it's an amazing feeling to be in a big city and not sticking out like a sore thumb. At Trash and Vaudeville we chatted with Jimmy (I LOVE Jimmy and he complimented me on my hair and outfit, which of course put a big smile on my face), I tried on the jacket of my dreams by Straight to Hell, I cried over all the lovely winklepickers I can't afford, as well as the creepers. I think you can tell that Trash and Vaudeville is an amazing store and one of my ultimate favorite places to shop! Derek and I walked out with a few little goodies along with my new bondage belt which I am excited to own as I'm always on the hunt for new belts to add to my collection.

I am not crazy, I love the white and black contrast!

To me, traveling isn't about just shopping and being a tourist, it's about the experience. We didn't spend a ton of money on physical items purchased, yet the lovely dinner, Tiki drinks, cab and subway trips, made the day trip delightful and memorable. I used to think that I would have to spend a ton of money while visiting NYC, yet we've done it on the cheap many times.

A few tips when traveling to a major city:
-Ask the locals where they like to eat, this will help you to avoid high-priced tourist traps and it's usually awesomely cheap eats. Remember that those street food vendors are cheaper than fast food and probably cleaner!
-Take public transit or walk. Spending a few dollars on a map of the area has saved our butts many times, though getting lost may be fun, wandering into "bad" parts of an area are not!
-Check out the local free papers that list off events while you're in town. There may be free things to do or you may even catch a band or art show!
-WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES. I have learned my lesson the hard way which resulted in agonizing foot pain. Comfortable shoes=you will have a more enjoyable experience.

Okay, enough talking, more pictures!

Dang, It's Hot Out!

Over the weekend it reached a record 89 degrees in Buffalo and for it only being May it's sorta insane! I have to admit I love warm weather, but the humidity is a killer, especially when you're trying to look cute when you're really melting. Ugh! The other reason why I don't enjoy the warm weather is the skin becomes more exposed and the staring, comments and harassment starts when you are tattooed. Usually people's comments don't bother me or when they strike up a conversation based on their admiration of my work, yet sometimes I want to just to go the store, buy my crap and get the hell outta there. People can truly be rude, yet I know it comes with the territory of being a tattoo individual or anyone who is 'out of the norm'. Most of the time I tell them to go to hell in my head and keep on smiling. *Wink*.

Let the skin exposure begin, now with shorts! Eeeeeeek!

Some funny things people have said to me:

-Are those real?
-You are so pretty, why would you do that to yourself?!
-Where else are you tattooed? (Ew!)
-I like your tat's, wanna see mine? (No thanks!)
-You would so much prettier without those things all over you. (Thanks random asshole!)
-*While petting me* Your artwork is so gorgeous. (I should have told them I have scabies)

I always say it's a good thing I have a really good sense of humor!

Shoes! Omg! : Outter Flat Cone Studded Flats

Photobucket

Spikes! Studs! Oh my! The Outter Flat Cone Studded Flats may be a knock off of a designer brand, but they sure are awesome for the $17.20 price tag. They also come in red if you're looking for a little 'pop' of color to add to your black summer dresses.

White And Black Pants?!

Photobucket

White and black pants?! Meagan have you completely lost your mind?! Perhaps or maybe it's just an answer to my never ending quest to find patterned leggings and/or skinny jeans that I like. I had to go to the dreaded mall to pick up some skin care items from The Body Shop and I decided since I was already subjecting myself to misery (when you've worked at mall off and on for years, I'm sure you detest it like I do) to do a little browsing. I went early in the afternoon on a weekday to avoid crowds and to keep my sanity, and it worked!

Photobucket

I picked these pants at Forever 21 for $22.80, I sorta fell in love with them when I saw them on a mannequin paired with a horrible rock tee. Forever 21 is one of those sorta stores that I love to hate, but my style is trendy right now, so I find some fun inexpensive pieces to add to the wardrobe. I can't get mad when I walk into a store and half of it contains lacy tops, over-sized flowy things, animal prints and tacky studded items. I always say, wait for the trend wave to die and then buy everything on clearance! Don't get mad, shop smart! Huzzah!

Check out my new necklace I got at a tattoo convention that Derek and I went to a few weeks ago. It's the Steampunk Bat Victorian Necklace by Classic Hardware, really nice piece and great quality!

Don't Call It A Come Back : Deathrock

Photobucket
Drawing my husband did for 'Deathrock Western NY'

The drawing above is sorta a joke as there is no deathrock "scene" to speak of in Western NY, yet there are people here and there that enjoy the music genre that is more intermingled with the punks than the goths.

My friend James and I have had many discussions about the current state of music and how people have a tendency to segregate these music genres into tiny little subsets that (personally) make my head spin. Grant it, I understand that the bands themselves (and a lot of times the fans) feel their music isn't just part of generic labeling (i.e.-goth, punk, post-punk, etc.) I'm not going to go into the origins of the music, that's what Google is for, *Wink*.

The thing that I've been scratching my head over is babble around the internet about deathrock dying (hehe!) and now having a comeback? It left!? I always knew it was here! Perhaps the idea that a large group of bands are producing this sound and now it's becoming more readily available? Regardless of whether you want to state deathrock is putting the 'punk back into goth' or vise versa (I personally think it's more rooted in punk), the fact that people are making music I love makes me a happy girl.

I have a theory that deathrock is the connecting bridge that will join the punk and goth scenes once again, and it's certainly a backlash of all the soul less electric crap being pumped out as fast as you can say, "Goth's not dead". Oops, I'll step off my soap box, but seriously, the 'Pong Song'?!, enough said.

Cvlt Nation wrote an interesting article and included a "Deathrock Mixtape", I highly recommend the read as well as downloading the new deathrock mixtape. Whether this deathrock resurgence is here to stay for just a passing fancy, I'll ride the wave and recoil back to my favorite music staples. It's nice to see current bands emerging, while old bands like Alien Sex Fiend are still creating music. Viva La Deathrock!

Remember kids, deathrock is not just about having a "deathhawk" and adorning yourself with ripped fishnets, yet it certainly is fun to look pretty while you're enjoying the music!

Support independent bands!

I love this band!

Graveyard Shift : Lethal Style Blog

My friend Miss Vanity Kills is a blogger for Lip Service's webzine which is entitled Lethal Style. Her newest entry features your truly in Graveyard Shift, with tongue-in-cheek deathrock haiku's and Miss Vanity Kills signature snarky (yet endearing) writing. I'm always flattered when she asks me to be featured and it's always more than a little nerve racking to have my photo taken. Luckily my good friend Zach Rose makes this ghoul look and feel good, plus we have a lot of fun!

Shoes! Omg! : Mustache High Heel Shoe

Photobucket
The Mustache High Heel Shoe first caught my interest as I love stripes and when they are black and white stripes, I love them even more! I have to admit I think the mustache on the shoe is a little hokey, yet I do enjoy the mustache design on the liner of the shoe. These heels would definitely be conversation starters and look adorable paired with a little black party dress.

Shame, Shame, I've Been Slacking!

I've been slacking this week, shame on me! I haven't forgotten about my lovely readers, so please excuse my absent mindedness! I think the nice weather has been baking my brain and making me giddy, but not too giddy to stop looking at shoes and thinking about yummy cocktails! Alas, Thursday and Friday passed, so I thought I would share my outfit for a dance my husband and I went to on Saturday. My dear friend Beth and her husband Jason have been throwing these jazz club-like dances that play; swing, rockabilly, jump blues and everything in between, lots of fun!

I reminded myself to take a photo with my handbag, as I have a massive handbag collection! I believe a handbag can really make or break an outfit and since I wear a lot of solid colored outfits, I like to infuse some fun with my handbag choices. I have to admit ninety percent of my collection is from Dungaree Dolly, once you have one bag, you want them all!

How many handbags do you own? Do you choose your handbag according to your outfit or are you a one handbag sorta gal?

Wednesday Link Round-Up

I've sorta been slacking on my link round-up's, not too many things have been titillating my brain waves and/or eye balls as of late. Now I'm back with some compiled internet info and perhaps something to distract you from doing real work (then again isn't the internet (in general) a big huge distraction?!).

+The husband I am have been playing apartment tetris and looking at all the photos in this blog wants me to throw everything out and start over again. Ok, ok, not really, but I love mid century modern and these photos are very inspirational.
+Porl Thompson of The Cure is now Pearl?! There are also some changes brewing that makes me a sad Cure fan.
+If you love vintage hairstyles, check out this blog, it's wonderfully informative!
+Check out Lady Bethezda's awesome video about fake eyelashes. Isn't she hot!?
