Weekend Getaway: Davide's Tropical Paradise

Okay, so sorry for the delay about our getaway weekend in Cleveland earlier this month. My parents had been staying with us (up from Florida, their house is OK, etc.) and it's been hectic and my mind has been in a fog. BUT, now that things are back to "normal" I can share some of our silliness.

So, I had seen some Instagram photos that my friend Shannon had posted about this amazingly kitschy AirBnB, which turned out to be Davide's Tropical Paradise. Once I told Derek about this little slice of paradise in Cleveland, Ohio, we knew we had to book a weekend! Turns out Adam Ant was performing so, a concert + Tikitastic fun=OH YES!!!!!

We loaded up our suitcases with our tropical garb as we wanted to take full advantage of the bar and the decor in the kitchen/eating area. I *may* have had a little hangover the next day due to me imbibing more than normal. Oh well, worth it!

The rest of the apartment is decorated with different themes, which you can see on their website. My descriptions (I should have taken more photos) of the decor will not do it justice. This will be the only place we will stay when we visit Cleveland, we felt soooo at home. Hahahaha!

I love going to Cleveland area, we get to visit some of our favorite vintage shops, eat some tasty food and visit Tiki bars. In fact, there is a new Tiki bar in the Akron, Ohio area called Tiki Underground, which we visited first thing before heading to the AirBnB on that Friday.

The outside and area are interesting, very odd spot for a Tiki bar. It didn't even look open when we arrived.

Bar area has a lot of cool mugs and decor. The owner was super nice and inviting. I have to admit the cocktail menu hanging on a little flip stand was different and bit odd.

Tiki Underground has not even been open a year and I wish the owners all the luck in the world! I think they have some things they still need to figure out, but I hope they grow in popularity and I hope travelers (like us) visit this interesting place.

Vacation Slides: Cleveland

"We're actually leaving earlier than planned?! Goooo us!"

Hello friends! Here are some photos of our mini break to Cleveland, OH. We left last Sunday and got home late afternoon on Tuesday. Much fun was had and many photos were taken!

"It's a major award!"

One of our stops was visiting the A Christmas Story house, which A Christmas Story is one of Derek's favorite movies and having it on continuously on Christmas Day has become a tradition. We got to tour the house, which is amazingly interactive, learned a lot and had fun!

"Be sure to drink your ovaltine!" I told Derek to try and recreate the look on Ralphie's face when he finally decodes Orphan Annie message. Not quite the same, but still funny. Hehe!

"He looks like a pink nightmare!"

Yep. You can put on a pink bunny suit at the house and Derek didn't hesitate for a moment. I was laughing so hard and so was the rest of our tour group. We like to have fun and (as you can see by the photos) we're not afraid to get totally silly. 

Goofing around the hostel before going to Porco

A trip wouldn't be complete without visiting a Tiki bar and Porco is one of our favorite places! I was pretty excited to have our first drinks served in a Darth Vader mug and a Chewy mug, these are by Think Geek and can be purchased here. I would like to get a few of these awesome mugs for our own collection.

We ate massive nachos, chatted with the bartenders and had to take the obligatory, "We're at a Tiki bar", photos. We like to document our Tiki bar visits as we like to try some of the drink recipes at home or take inspiration from the bar's decor. 

On the last day we went to the Dittrick medical museum and it was AWESOME! Unfortunately due to only having an hour to explore (parking was a bit of a pain), we didn't get to see everything, yet it just means we'll have to go back! I also want to mention that the museum is free and if you live around Cleveland or are planning a visit, it's a must see!

There was an 1800's physicians office display, complete with the skeleton in the corner that I wanted to take home.

We also went to Lakeview Cemetery and I was so busy enjoying the view, I forgot to take photos. Oh well, but fun was had by all, yet I always love coming home. *Wink*

Newest Additions to Our Tiki Room

I love vintage furniture and decor, our home is a mix of Mid Century Modern, taxidermy, antique medical instruments, vintage knick knacks, collected artwork, and our beloved Tiki room. Derek and I have affectionately dubbed our home style as "Mid Century Macabre". We both share the love of home decor, the thrill of the hunt for the perfect piece and the adventurous tale that goes along with it. You can find us haunting antique places, flea markets and checking in at our local thrift shops for a piece to add to our little apartment. We like to travel to even just look at "old stuff" (as I would say) and browse around for that one little treasure we may bring home....or big treasure. I have to confess, I'm addicted to chairs and I need to be stopped!

These four new (to us) vintage bamboo bar stools came from our spontaneous trip to Cleveland, Ohio this past weekend. We visited two of our most favorite vintage shops, Flower Child and Sweet Lorain. I love going to Sweet Lorain as Red the owner is so nice and always says, "Welcome Home". Hehe! He always remembers us and is so helpful and kind. I wish I could just live at Sweet Lorain's, I think I would die from happiness.

I'm wearing a dress I purchased from Target a few weeks when it was scorching hot, of course as soon as I bought it the weather cooled down significantly. It's nice and light weight, flowy and I am a sucker for the lace accents. I added the scarf belt from another dress to add a little visual interest though it's great worn plain.

I'm really enjoying the high-low flowy dress trend right now. Keep em' coming! *Wink*
